Traffic Safety

Dear Parents and Carers,

As many of you will be aware, recently there have been several safety incidents around the school related to traffic at drop off and pick up times as well as commentary on Facebook regarding the issues. These include parents parking irresponsibly and buses mounting the pavements on Burgess Road. The safety of our children is paramount and improving their safety at drop off and pick up times requires a concerted and focussed effort to deliver the necessary changes.

Parents should be key in delivering this change and as a result, Queensferry Primary School Parent Council are forming a Parent Council traffic safety sub-committee. The purpose of this committee will be to engage with stakeholders including the community council, the police, local city of Edinburgh councillors, and potentially our MSP and MP, working collectively to deliver these changes. This could involve thinking of ways to encourage more parents to walk their children to school and promoting more responsible parking right through to more structural changes such as; the addition of yellow lines, road crossings or changing the layout of the roads surrounding the school e.g.  making it one way on a permanent or temporary basis.

The intention is for the sub-committee to meet several times a year with the first meeting taking place ideally before Xmas. If you are interested in being involved with the sub-committee, please e-mail the Parent Council at parentcouncil.qps@gmail.com

The Parent Council at Queensferry Primary School would also like to take the opportunity to remind parents that parking on the yellow zig-zag lines around the school is illegal between the hours of 8am and 4pm. There have been several instances recently where parents have parked on the zig-zag lines on Burgess Road when dropping off their children. This has obscured the view of the lollipop lady on Burgess Road making it more difficult to for her to see oncoming traffic.

The school is currently engaging with the local police who have agreed to take steps to tackle this issue. Parking further away from the school and taking an additional 10 minutes to drop off or pick up our children is not ideal however it is a small price to pay for ensuring our children’s safety.

We look forward to hearing from you,

Queensferry Primary School Parent Council
