Additional Support Needs

An additional support need comes from Kids_jumping_on_booksanything which is a barrier to learning.  Most, or all, schools will have some children with additional support needs of some kind.  The education authority has many legal duties towards pupils with additional support needs.

Information about this is contained in a booklet called In On The Act : Information For The General Public which is published on the education authority website at  or contact the additional support for learning team on telephone number 0131 469 3444.

Inclusion statement

A message from our Support for Learning Teacher:

I am the Support for Learning Teacher at Queensferry Primary School. Although I work predominately with children from P3 – P7 I also oversee the additional support given to the younger children.

In my job I work with children who require extra help to develop their skills in both literacy and numeracy. This may be in class where I support the children with reading or in some instances I withdraw small groups or individual children to work on specific phonic tasks to develop both their reading and spelling skills.

Another of my roles is to liaise with the teaching staff to find the best approaches and teaching techniques to support the children to access the curriculum. This additional support may be in the form of resources or in the creation of specific plans and programmes to best support learning.

I also work very closely with our excellent Pupil Support Assistants to co-ordinate their timetables and provide the appropriate guidance to best nurture the youngsters in our care.

In school we are also supported by outside agencies such as Speech or Occupational Therapy. I work alongside these colleagues to coordinate their work with children in school.

If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to be in touch.  I can be contacted in school Tuesday to Thursday. My email address is:

Yours sincerely,

Irene Grant
