Nursery Diary

Friday 13th – Thursday 19th May

This week in maths we are extending our money focus by setting up a shop for role play. We have also had a ticket office outside selling tickets for the mud kitchen! We are using real coins as far as possible to help the children to recognise them. The children have been making their own signs and price labels and have been deciding what to sell. Our SEAL focus is on counting movements (chops, stamps, claps).

In literacy we are focusing on developing listening and talking skills around the nursery, as well as awareness of print and phonics for our children moving on to school. We are providing opportunities to write, build words and recognise letters across the nursery. Look out for our ‘talking table’ which will provide an object or picture to stimulate discussion.

Our Health and Wellbeing focus is looking at our emotions. For preschool children this is in talking about feelings around change and moving on, while for our younger children it is more general discussion around identofying our emotions.

In other areas of the curriculum we are continuing to explore growth and life cycles. We should have some caterpillars joining us this week to support us in exploring the life cycle of butterflies. We have already investigated frogs and tadpoles.

We are VERY short of junk for junk modelling. Please bring in any boxes, tubs, tubes etc. that you would normally put into your recycling bin. Many thanks!

P1 are measuring up!

This week we are learning about the different ways we can measure all the things around us. It would be great if the children could think about measure at home too.

Weight

We will be learning to use scales to find out how many blocks different things weigh. We are also using the words heavier and lighter and spotting the numbers on packets of food to find out how much they weigh.

Maybe you could talk about weight when you visit the supermarket or when you’re making dinner?

Area

We are using blocks to find out how large different spaces are. We are using the words larger area and smaller area to describe the size of flat objects.

You could talk about the area of anything flat, i.e. the size of plates, paper, posters.

Length

We are using all sorts of ways (hands, feet, paper clips and straws) to measure, and describing length using the words long and short. We are thinking about why we don’t always get the same answers as each other and why we need standard units such as cm and m.

You could talk about the length of their food over supper. Hopefully after a few chomps their green beans won’t be so long anymore!

Volume and Capacity

We are finding out how many cupfuls we need to fill different containers and using the words more and less.

Maybe think about how much juice or water they need to fill different glasses, or even how many cupfuls they need to fill a vase for that beautiful bunch of flowers they picked from the garden for you!

Nursery Diary

Friday 29th April -Friday 6th May
A massive thanks to all of have pledged some time to help with various tasks around the nursery. We are so grateful for all of the offers of support. If you haven’t offered but would like to, please just let us know!

It’s a very short week this week! Remember that nursery is closed on Monday and Thursday this week. We will be finishing off our work around Jack and the Beanstalk:

-Acting out the story of Jack and the Beanstalk using props.
– Learning about money and identifying coins (linking to Jack selling his cow).
-Tasting different types of beans and growing our own.
-Discussing how we can get help if we need it
-Looking at the work of illustrators and discussing our thoughts on different pictures of Jack and the giant.
-Sorting some magic beans.
-Playing the ‘beans’ game (this is lots of fun – we can teach you about it!).

We are continuing to welcome the children and staff from Craigroyston nursery. We are enjoying getting to know them all and having them in our sessions. Our children have been very welcoming and friendly.

We are VERY short of junk for junk modelling. Please bring in any boxes, tubs, tubes etc. that you would normally put into your recycling bin. Many thanks!
