I Bike

2017
Queensferry Primary School runs I Bike events and we have an active I Bike Crew. The I Bike crew are a group of Primary 5 children who are enthusiastic about riding bikes and bike safety in and around school. These children are:

Emma Garmany                        Rihanna Connell
Charlotte Grant                        Niamh Gorman
Rory Davidson                          Meggie Clark
Ruby Hood                                 Abigail Whyte

Each week this crew count how many bikes and scooters come to school. The also help to organise events in school that encourage even more children to cycle or scoot to school.

At the minute we have the Golden Padlock competition. This involves a bike that is regularly brought into school, being chosen each week. A Golden Padlock is attached to the bike by the I Bike crew and the owner comes to Primary 5 to select a prize of their choice. As the year goes on we will hold a variety of events to encourage healthy journeys to school.
For upcoming events please watch below:

Friday 24th March – Our Big Pedal competition has been running for a week now and already we have a number of children who have brought their bikes for four days and have their golden tickets for prize draw. The school target was to get 15% of children bringing a bike or scooter to school. This week we have achieved 16%, so well done to all those children who have taken part.

Monday 20th March – The I Bike crew are launching a new competition called ‘The Big Pedal’ which will run from Monday 20th March until the end of term. Children are being encouraged to bring their bikes to school and they can win a variety of prizes including a scooter, a helmet and lots of other smaller prizes. Over the two weeks, if children bring in their bikes for 4 of the 10 days they will be entered into a prize draw. Also each day there are over 50 bikes and scooters together the school bike will move around the world map. We are hoping to move all around the world. Our school may also win prizes just for taking part in this national competition. Thank you.

What is I Bike?
Sustrans’ I Bike project works with schools in Scotland to promote cycling, scooting and walking to school. It is an excellent way to incorporate physical activity into children’s daily routines. The benefits of physical activity include increased alertness in class, improved health and reduced risk of obesity. I Bike aims to increase the number of children travelling actively to school, particularly by bike.

They work with each of their schools to develop a structured programme of cycling related activities including route planning, led rides, themed Bike To School events, bike maintenance sessions, bike clubs and themed assemblies.
Active travel also includes walking and scooting and is great for all ages. It can incorporate healthy exercise into the daily routine, can improve children’s concentration at school and increases independence for older pupils, as well as being a more sustainable way to get around.

Through running a series of fun and inclusive activities, I Bike aims to keep pupils cycling when they move on from Secondary School and to increase the numbers of pupils who want to cycle to school.
